Pearls of Great Price… A Breast Cancer Awareness Program

Just as in the United States, places like Pakistan are not immune to the devastating effects of women’s breast cancer. The prevalence of breast cancer in Pakistan is very similar to that in the United States; the big difference is the survival rate. In the U.S. 89 out of 100 women survive breast cancer, while in Pakistan only 10 out of 100 survive.
Pearls of Great Price, a breast cancer awareness program was launched in 2008. Ways this program has begun to make a difference:
Medical professionals in more than 9 hospitals have been aware of the national statistics
Several hundred women have been taught self examination techniques and encouraged to tell other women
Benefits of early cancer diagnosis have been taught throughout hospitals and community events
In early 2010 a women’s clinic was opened to better address the medical needs of the female patient.
